On the road again

Another good weekend. It involved a lot of driving for the women folk and a lot of walking for the men folk. Dad, mom and I drove up to Tusayan which is right outside of Grand Canyon National Park and met Mr. Walker and Nana D on Friday. We went out for a prehike pizza and ice cream dinner. Perfect fuel for the next day. Brian and his girlfriend Christina drove up later that night so they missed the healthy meal.
Bright and early Saturday morning (5:30 AM) Nana D drove the boys to the South Kaibab trail head and they started their treck into the depths of the earth. Mom, Christina, Nana D and I packed up the car and started our driving treck around the canyon to the North Rim. It was only about 4 hours so it was tolerable and mom really liked driving dad's new SUV. We checked into our cabin and had a little picnic out by the aspen grove. Our cabin was very cool and was right at the edge of a huge meadow with tons of deer. We headed out about 4 to pick up the boys. We were a little late getting them so they didn't have a welcome wagon with beer to cheer them when they came out. They all looked a little tired but otherwise were pretty perky for just having hiked 21 miles (the last 7 were straight uphill- ugghh). We went back to the cabin and everyone just crashed- early bed time for all.
Brian and Christina left early Sunday morning and mom and Nana D hiked down to Supai Tunnel which is about 2 miles down. Then they had to hike back up. Mom did OK but Nana D was hurting. Might have something to do with the cracked ribs she got when she tripped and fell on a hike the weekend before. She hung in there well though- she 's a trooper! Mr. Walker, dad and I went in search of football on TV and a cold beer.
Sunday night, we ate dinner at the North Rim lodge. It was very good and so was I until about 8 when I started my little meltdown. It was my bedtime after all. On the drive back, it was dark but we saw so many deer all along the side of the road. It was a little nerve wracking because they kept coming out of nowhere. I couldn't really see anything but that is what everyone was saying.
We drove 10 hours back to Tucson on Monday and I was so good. I hardly cried at all- mom was very relieved but felt horrible everytime she had to shove me back into the car seat for another 3 hours. No more driving for a while! This was my first official trip to the canyon (out of utero- mom hiked it when she was 3 months pregnant with me) and I think I liked it. I guess I better since I will probaby be seeing a lot more of it.
